Lake Erie teacher visits Fort Knox on tour for educators

South Euclid resident Rhonda Novakovic, Vocational Specialist at Life Skills Center of Lake Erie, recently returned from an Army educators tour of Fort Knox, Ky., where she got a first-hand view of Army training for new recruits.

The training also provided her with a practical background when presenting military options to students.

Novakovic's training included Static Display, Kelly Engagement Skills - Marksman Training, tank simulator, Unit Conduct of Fire and Close Combat Tactical Training.

She said the Army is stepping up to address the problem of high school dropouts with test-taking skills, mentoring and other educational programs for all students, not just recruits.

"I will say I was impressed on how the Army is not ignoring a problem but rising up to the challenge of solving it," she said. “They wanted to know how they can help keep students from dropping out.”

Navakovic said nearly 30 graduates have joined the Armed Forces in her 4 ½ years of service at the school.

“Their maturity level has definitely skyrocketed when they’ve returned,” she said. “They get a better understanding of the world around them.”
