Story about teacher's trip

By Katie Kessler
(Willoughby) News-Herald Correspondent

Rhonda Novakovic was a recipient of behind-the-scenes training from Army educators.

The South Euclid resident spent a week in Fort Knox, Ky., as part of a program designed to offer skills in presenting the military as a career option.

Novakovic, a vocational specialist at Life Skills Center of Lake Erie in Cleveland, has seen dozens of her graduates join the armed forces.

"Their maturity level definitely skyrocketed when they've returned," she said. "They get a better understanding of the world around them."

The key Novakovic remembers most from her training was the "team approach in helping our students."

The training focuses on decreasing the problem of high school dropouts by implementing test-taking skills, mentoring and providing educational programs for students.

Her stint in Kentucky also included such skill-building as static display, marksman training, tank simulation, unit conduct of fire and tactical training.

What is Novakovic¹s game plan to decrease the dropout rate?

"A group effort," she said,"everyone needs to get involved."

The Life Skills Center encompasses alternative education methods for students ages 16-22.

Life Skills Center of Hamilton County spotlighted graduates

Dennis Blieden

Dennis Blieden is excited to have been accepted at Ohio State University, and will begin his studies there in the Fall of 2007.

While completing his high school academic work at the Life Skills Center of Hamilton County, Dennis routinely put in extra time after his regular class session to tutor his fellow students.

All who know Dennis are proud of the way that he has turned his life around and “made good” on the mistakes he’s made.

Dennis is an exceptional student and has a strong commitment to helping those around him.

Crucial to the development of his commitment to service was his experiences at the Life Skills Center, as well as a recent visit to Holocaust sites in Europe.

Dennis delivered the student address at the Life Skills Center of Hamilton County’s June 2007 commencement.

Daniel Benedetti

Daniel Benedetti felt it was important to complete his high school education and earn his high school diploma, so he enrolled in the Life Skills Center of Hamilton County.

In less than two months, Danny was able to complete the academic credits he needed in order to finish.

After leaving the Life Skills Center, Danny answered his country’s call and enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Danny is now with the 101st Airborne, stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, and is awaiting deployment to either Iraq or Afghanistan.

While he was not be able to be present for his Life Skills graduation, Danny was present in spirit and received special recognition for his service to our country.

Additionally, Danny’s proud father, Mike Benedetti, received Danny’s diploma.

Graduation coverage from the Ohio Coalition for Quality Education

Life Skills Center of Middletown presented diplomas to 21 energized high school students.

Since June 2000, Ohio Life Skills Centers has given a 'second chance' to over
6,000 students.

Each student had special challenges but community schools like Life Skills Centers are designed to work with this population of students.

A highly trained and dedicated staff that forms a close bond
with the students and parents helped these youth to pass the Ohio
Proficiency/Ohio Graduation Tests and earn a high school diploma.

Charles Hall, administrator of Life Skills Center of Middletown began the evening by encouraging parents and friends of students in the audience to, "get involved. Be happy on this occasion. Let these students know that you are proud of them. Make some noise."

He then introduced two former students, Whitnie Slone and Kristin Shafer.

Before enrolling in LSC, both had attended a traditional high school, were
impacted by a personal crisis.dropped out of schoo and thought their
future educational opportunities were nonexistent. Then they were
introduced to Life Skills Center of Middletown and Charles Hall, who stands 6 foot 6 inches tall, has a booming laugh and every day he inspires each student to reach their full potential.

Whitnie Slone attended Life Skills Center of Middletown by day and Sinclair Community College in the evening.

She earned a 3.5 GPA and her goal is to attend the University of Cincinnati Engineering College and eventually work towards a Masters degree.

Kristen Shafer also graduated from Life Skills Center of Middletown in 2003 and went on to graduate from Miami University of Ohio with a bachelor's degree.

State Senator Gary Cates delivered the Commencement Address.

Serving on both the Finance committee and Vice-Chair of the Senate Education Committee he has provided a consistently 'strong voice' on behalf of community schools.

Speaking without prepared notes, the Senator talked about "school
choice vs. school chance."

He told the graduating students that "life isn't always fair but it is usually what you make of it."

Challenging every student he said, "don't let anyone tell you that you can't reach your life goals. First, dream it, then work hard..and live it".

Each graduate was then asked to present a yellow rose to someone in the audience that "made a difference in their lives."

Parents, relatives and friends received roses but ... several emotional students presented their rose to Mr. Hall.

It was a wonderful evening filled with joy, happiness, emotion ... and lots of tears.

From left, Life Skills Center of Dayton Vocational Specialist Matthew Wingard stands with student Kristen Shelton, Master Teacher Teresa Fife, student Jessica Jones and Vocational Specialist Thomas Jagels recently at the school.

Life Skills Center of Dayton spotlighted graduates

Leah James

Leah James enrolled in Life Skills of Dayton in February 2005.

Leah was searching for a school in which she could stay focused and remain on track and achieve her goal of graduation.

The appeal of attending school for only four hours a day, working at your own pace, and the opportunity to work lead Leah to Life Skills.

Beginning with eight credits, Leah knew it was going to be a long way to graduation, and in order to achieve success she would need to stay focused. At times this was difficult, especially with the unexpected death of her mother.

Although Leah is credit complete, she has continued to attend school to serve as a mentor for others.

Leah will graduate with her mother in her heart and with her loved ones by her side.

Artesa Hopkins-Dewberry

Artesa Hopkins-Dewberry enrolled in Like Skills of Dayton in March 2006.

Since that time, Artesa—the mother of two and wife—earned 12.75 core credits from Life Skills, thus allowing her to graduate this June.

In order to graduate in June, Artesa focused on her academic studies and earned six core credits in a two-month period, making her by far our most studious student.

Because Artesa’s home life is busy—how could it not be with both Artesa and her husband working full time and raising two kids — she was happy to take advantage of Life Skills’ flexible schedule and graduate with her high school diploma.

22 graduate from school

Twenty-two students graduated Thursday night from Life Skills Center of Canton during a ceremony at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Canton.

“I did it, Mama,” Brad Zickefoose, 21, of Massillon called out to his mother, Debbie, as he received his diploma.

He later said he was the first member of his family to graduate from high school.

“I wouldn’t have made it without the support of my family,” Zickefoose said.

Speakers encouraged students to follow their dreams.

“I’m sure everyone is familiar with the saying ‘Education is the key to success’ and while some of us are sitting here thinking this is such a cliché,” said Amanda Renish, a 2003 graduate of Life Skills Center of Elyria who served as the commencement speaker. “Please know that this saying speaks volumes of life to each and every Life Skills graduate. Because you are graduating, I believe that you can do anything you put your mind to. I believe your education is the key to every dream you have.”

“Nothing should stop you from reaching your goals,” said school administrator Scott McClain. “You’ve been through too much to stop now.”

Graduating students are from Canton, Massillon, Perry Township, Jackson Township, Plain Township, Malvern, Canton Township, Dover and Alliance.

Text of Amanda Renish's speech to graduates

Hello, My name is Amanda Renish and I work for Life Skills Center of Elyria. My position there is UPSHOTS facilitator.

I have a full scholarship from Life Skills Center and White Hat Management! At this time I am working on my bachelor’s degree in Social Work. AND I WILL go on to get my masters degree!

I am honored to have been invited here by your administrator, BUT most importantly graduates I stand here today in honor of you and your graduation.

I stand here knowing the struggles you have had to go through in order to be where you are today. I know these struggles personally because I too was in your shoes and I am a proud Life Skills graduate. (Class of 03!)

Life Skills Center changed my life dramatically. Here I am working towards a goal in college, and had it not been for the Life Skills Centers I don’t know where I’d be.

I thank God for the Life Skills Centers and all the staff members that have helped me take a look at my life and plant a seed of desire in my heart. Desire to reach for my dreams!

But putting me aside I am most proud to stand here and say that against all odds you too, have conquered graduation! Class of 2007 you guys are awesome!

And you may be too humble to say it, but I am not! This next comment is to all the people who have doubted you, “HATERS” … IN YOUR FACE!

You guys did it and on behalf of the Life Skills staff and Whitehat Management I want to say with all sincerity, CONGRATULATIONS graduates!

I’m sure everyone is familiar with the saying “Education is the key to success” and while some of us are sitting here thinking this is such a cliché…. please know that this saying speaks volumes of life to each and every Life Skills graduate.

Because you are graduating, I believe that you can do anything you put your mind to. I believe your education is the key to every dream you have.

Graduates do me a favor. Take a step back from all this graduation excitement and take a moment to think of your biggest dream you’d like to accomplish…

You got it in your mind? Are you thinking about it?

Now let me let you in on a little secret.

Your education is going to be the reason that you will accomplish that very dream. Your education is the key to all of your dreams.

I have a little gift for every graduate. And that is a key that does not have its notches.

It is a notch less key because I want you to know that your education gives you the power and authority to put notches on this key. Notches that will open doors that you have always dreamed of opening!

I am opening doors everyday and it is because of my education. The very same education that you have!

When the going gets tough after tonight, I challenge you to look at this key and be reminded that you have the power in your life to do anything you seek to accomplish!

After graduation if you need a kick in the “seat”… then I invite you to come back to the Life Skills Center, because I guarantee you the administrator and teachers are going to be at the school waiting to encourage and support you, just like they have done for me!! If you need help deciding which university you will attend, or what career is best for you, please know that the Life Skills Center supports YOU!!!

Graduates congratulations, God Bless and go take the world on with confidence, knowing you have the KEY, especially designed by you, that will open whatever doors you so choose!

Spotlighted Middletown graduates

Danielle Huntsberger

Danielle Huntsberger, 16, was determined to graduate from high school and receive her diploma before her baby was born.

She left Franklin High School early in her pregnancy and enrolled in Life Skills in October 2006.

During her time at Life Skills she was driven to accomplish her goal and worked hard until she had completed her academic requirements.

Kellilee Mosley

Kellilee Mosley, 21, had her daughter Lauryn when she was 17 years old.

When Lauryn was 3 months old she became sick and Kellilee had to leave Middletown High School in order to take care of her baby.

She tried online classes and then enrolled in Life Skills.

Eventually, she left Life Skills.

She re-enrolled in February 2006 needing only one class to graduate.

She was determined that this time she was graduating.

Kellilee received her diploma on June 15 and has hopes of getting a full-time job and taking some college classes.

Her dream is to one day open her own catering/bakery business.

Spotlighted Life Skills Center of Cincinnati graduates

Jemar Hood

It took me a long time to get to this time in my life.

I am 21 years old; I will be graduating June 15, 2007.

I have had to repeat every grade twice, dropped out of school, tried the GED and returned t o finish school.

My brother died July 18, 2006 and then I lost my mother Sept. 29, 2006.

I was very sad, lost and confused, but now I have seen the light.

I now know that the things I do now will make my mother proud.

Thank you Life Skills Center!

Talisha Cogsville

My name is Talisha Cogsville.

I am 23 years of age.

I am a soon to be graduate of Life Skills Center of Cincinnati.

I re-enrolled in LSC in July of 2006 after being there prior in 2001. I didn't accomplish anything when I was enrolled during the year of 2001, so I dropped out without earning any credits.

I had two kids by August of 2001, so I felt that at the time, my children needed me.

I gained custody of my sister that is only one year younger than me but she suffers from Cerebral Palsy.

It was very hard to care for her and my two kids. While all of this was taking place I was just 18 years of age.

Everything was overwhelming, but I managed.

At ages 19-21 I had a baby each year. I was 21 years old with five babies.

My sister graduated which inspired me to get back into school. Her graduation was bittersweet. I was happy for her, but yet sad for myself. At that moment I knew what I had to do. I re-enrolled in LSC once again. It was July 2006.

I didn't have any credits. I had to earn 20 credits in 9 months in order to receive my diploma. I pushed myself to attend school everyday and worked until I fell asleep at my computer sometimes. By December I had 14 credits.

In April I earned my last two credits. In December I found out that I was once again pregnant.

I kept going even with the complications I was having. It is now June, I'm still pregnant (8months) and I am graduating on June 15th, 2007. I DID IT!!!!!

There was a lot that could and tried to stop me, but nothing can stop God's will.

I thank God and all the dedicated staff at LSC.

I've had the support of wonderful teachers, administrators and my family advocate. Thanks so much I love you all!

Life Skills Center of Columbus North graduates

1. Travis Thompson: IEP student who earned 8 core credits + 1 work credit at our school. He never looks for the easy way out--he really puts the effort into his work. He will end up with a 3.5 GPA. He is a student who appreciates diversity.
2. Stephanie Strawser: Earned 6.5 credits + 4 work credits with us. She completed right before her 23rd birthday, but still needed to pass two OPT's. She has worked full time, so she found it difficult to make it to school for tutoring. When she finally did come for tutoring, she ended up passing both the OPT and OGT math tests. She never gave up.
3. Shakenya Ingram-Williams: After attending six different high schools, she earned 3.25 credits with us and passed her last OPT at our school.

Coverage of graduation

Story in June 16, 2007 edition of The Middletown Journal

Students take part in project

On June 13, female staff members and students at Life Skills Center of Columbus Southeast joined together for an “Explore Your Creativity” jewelry making party.

The students filed in to participate in a hands-on session, which allowed them to express themselves in a positive way, and promoted camaraderie.

Queens is a group that was created to give young women an opportunity to be directly influenced by positive role models in the building and from the community by way of our monthly meetings.

The female staff of the Life Skills Center of Columbus Southeast use fun activities to facilitate serious conversation and create teachable moments.

The Queens meeting has been a source of excitement for the entire building including the male students who want to know why they can’t participate.

Nevertheless, LSC Southeast has great expectations for what the future holds for Queens.

We hope that through their education and the empowerment that they receive through Queens that it will develop our young women so that they can be successful!!

Workshop mania at school

Life Skills Center of Miami-Dade Family Advocate Kety Lopez organized several workshops to make our students more aware of everyday situations and their futures.

These workshops consisted of vital information for our students such as Parenting Class, Miami Dade College Orientation, Birth Control, Dating Violence, Life Skills Classes, and Compromising Relationships at home.

Joe Schillaci, a police detective who has his own series on A&E television network, conducted a special Bullying Presentation.

Life Skills grad to speak at Canton graduation

With Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland’s proposed cuts on charter schools and funding, school choice has become a hot-button topic.

Amanda Renish, a 2003 graduate of Life Skills Center of Elyria, said the school has saved her life.

Renish will speak during graduation ceremonies for Life Skills Centers of Canton 6 p.m. June 21 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Canton

Renish told attendees at a recent school rally in Cleveland that she started to struggle in school after her father died.

“That was the beginning of my struggle in school,” she said. “My mother and I were forced to move two sometimes three times a year in order to make ends meet. Another apartment, another group of friends, and ultimately another school! I moved three times in high school alone. After so many moves my grades were slipping tremendously. I was screaming inside for stability. Honestly I was just waiting for my mom to let me drop out. All my siblings did, so I figured I would just fall through the cracks at my school while waiting on my mom to give me the “okay” to quit.”

Renish said she was able to find hope at Life Skills Center of Elyria.

“But when I heard about Life Skills Center of Elyria and how the choice to go to the school was so easy and the curriculum was invented for a kid like me, I started to feel the spark I used to feel when I was in elementary, and my father was alive,” she said.

After Renish graduated from Life Skills, she’s training to be a social worker and works at the school, teaching UPSHOTS, a program on drug and alcohol awareness.

Lake Erie teacher visits Fort Knox on tour for educators

South Euclid resident Rhonda Novakovic, Vocational Specialist at Life Skills Center of Lake Erie, recently returned from an Army educators tour of Fort Knox, Ky., where she got a first-hand view of Army training for new recruits.

The training also provided her with a practical background when presenting military options to students.
