Trumbull school hosting collection drive for the military

Life Skills Center of Trumbull County is taking part in the Operation First Response drive.

The collection is to assist the wounded military and their families with personal and financial needs who are serving our country.

The school is collecting items from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at the school. The collection runs until Nov. 9.

“It goes along with Veteran’s Day,” Social Studies teacher Scott Davis said. “We’re trying to teach civic responsibility.”

Davis, a Gulf War veteran, says those in the military enjoy receiving items from home.

“People sent us letters and that meant so much to me,” he said. "I still have everything sent to me, and it was sent from people I don'’t know.”

Operation First Response sends backpacks filled with t-shirts, boxer shorts, sweatpants or shorts, socks, and a complete array of hygiene items along with a handmade lap quilt in each backpack.

Items being collected include t-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, knit boxers, white crew socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, disposable razors, shampoo, hand lotion, anti-bacterial wet wipes, five inch hair combs, nail clippers and files, prepaid phone cards, and handmade cot quilts.

All hygiene items must be travel size and new black backpacks without logos can be donated, but must be at least 17 inches by 12.5 inches by 7 inches big.

Operation First Response backpacks are sent to the combat support hospitals (CHS) in Iraq, Landstuhl Army Medical Hospital in Germany, and other locations.
