August school highlights

LSC Miami-Dade would like to share with all of you our most recent "Happenings" for the month of August 2007:

New Developments: Stacy London, Assistant Administrator from LSC Opa-Locka has joined our team as Interim Administrator. We also want to extend a welcome to our new Intervention Specialist, Hugo Linares, and Nadhege Senecal, ESE teacher, who will be joining our family from LSC Opa-Locka. We congratulate Esther Lozano, ESE Specialist, who has been promoted and will now serve as the ESE Supervisor for all of South Florida Life Skills Centers.

Recent Events: All staff members attended the Life Skills Centers of Florida Leaders of Learning Conference in St. Petersburg, Fla., July 24-26. Though we did not win any events, we did come together as a team deeming ourselves winners. London attended the first Charter School Operations Meeting of the 2007-08 school year. The first Board Meeting of the year was conducted this August at LSC Opa-Locka. Attendees from the LSC Miami Family were: Eladio Acosta, LMS Coordinator, Lourdes Vazquez, Purchasing Personnel Secretary, Esther Lozano, Intervention Specialist, Kety Lopez, Family Advocate, and Ellenor Paul, our English Teacher.
Staff Professional Development: Our Enrollment Specialist, Christian Hernandez, has been conducting orientations for prospective students. Ruben Sanchez, Employability Specialist, participated in a Cooperative Education workshop at Miami Springs Senior High, our Science teacher Zenaida Lampon and Intervention Specialist, Hugo Linares attended an Apex Training Workshop at LSC Opa-Locka. Mr. Linares and Ms. Lozano will also be participating in the A plus Teleconference / Webinair. Furthermore, our Purchasing Personnel Secretary, Lourdes Vazquez, also received training at LSC West Palm Beach.
Community Activities:
Ruben Sanchez, Employability Specialist, has coordinated the first Blood Drive of the 2007-08 school year, in collaboration with the Blood Bank of South Florida. It will be held on August 31.

Academic News:
Intervention Specialist, Esther Lozano provided professional development to the instructional staff. Instructors now have a better understanding on protocol for processing an ESE student. Mercedes Tanus, Math Instructor/Curriculum Specialist provided professional development to the instructional staff on the similarities and differences, pros and cons between APEX and PLATO, our online curriculum.

Upcoming Student Workshops:
Kety Lopez, our Family Advocate conducted during the second week of August workshops that focused on Internet Safety and Dating Violence.

Student Perks:
Starting in August, Fridays has been designated as Movie Day. Students utilize Bonus Bucks to purchase snacks and beverages at our concession stand.
